What is the origin of the name ” Scagno “? What the meaning?
Does it come from “Ius scannaggi”, the tax due to the Duke of Martina Franca for each slaughtered animal.
Or, maybe, as a measuring device for the soil between two furrows – called “scamnum” – that means ” Scagno ” in the latin language – by the Romans.
Or, maybe, the money box “scagno-scrigno” used by the tax collector in those times for keeping the money given as taxes and contributions.
We like thinking that this last explanation is the perfect one: a drawer to look after a huge treasure. To defend it, there are no keys or padlocks. It’s opened, and it shows a wonderful treasure of peace, nature and environment.
